Pitt Field

Pitt Field Renovations Photo Gallery

When the University of Richmond entered the Atlantic 10 Conference it brought one of the nation's finest baseball facilities. Pitt Field, located on the campus of the University of Richmond, offers players and fans a unique and enjoyable setting for America's pastime.

One of the most pristine diamonds in collegiate baseball sits in a quaint ballpark surrounded by large trees. The field sits on a hill overlooking Westhampton Lake, the most scenic part of the Richmond campus.

The Spiders play on an infield of Bermuda grass with red clay and sand baselines. Modern drainage lines under each baseline have made the field easier to care for and help prevent standing water. The warning track in the outfield is covered with granite dust. The outfield fence, which was recently replaced during the offseason with new chain link and a padded cover, is eight feet high with a 40-foot section which stands 10 feet high in centerfield.

Pitt Field's left and right field lines measure 328 feet from home plate, while the power alleys are 350 feet. The 10-foot fence in centerfield is 380 feet from home plate.

Outside the playing field the stadium boasts newly redesigned turf bullpens and batting cages along the third base line, all of which is in future plans to be covered. Large newly built dugouts with storage areas flank the baselines and include fully functioning bathrooms.

Bleachers designed to accommodate 600 spectators and a two-story press box for local and visiting media provide an excellent setting for those who support and provide exposure for the Spiders. A sign on the front of the press box commemorates Mac Pitt's career and displays his retired number. Many fans opt to sit on the embankment behind right and right-center field, providing a unique vantage point.

Thanks to those involved with the Spider Baseball Initiative several projects have been completed to update the facility. The outfield fence project as well as the right and leftfield boundary walls have been updated and now showcase rod-iron fencing and brick-capped pillars. In the future, the Spiders plan to add two state-of-the art scoreboards along with a message-center, a right-field spectator deck as well as a redesigned grandstand and fan commons area which will include 150 chair back seats and a four-story elevator.

The Spiders also use indoor facilities which include a hitting and pitching training facility in Millhiser Gymnasium, adjacent to the Spider basketball arena, the Robins Center. The facility includes several batting cages, simulated bullpens, warm-up areas and tee-work stations. A Conference Room is also part of the indoor facility and is available for use by any of the team members.

The Spiders also use the weight room facility in the Robins Center under the supervision of Joe Maher, the Spider Baseball team's Strength and Conditioning coach.

The Richmond baseball team has exclusive access to its spacious updated locker room which is second to none. Located in the Robins Center, it is equipped with individual lockers, showers and a video-viewing area. A separate locker room for the Spider coaches is also part of the locker room area.
