Excellence. Richmond head women's lacrosse coach Sue Murphy accepts nothing less. In her first five seasons at Richmond, the Spiders have compiled a 54-34 record and made four appearances in the Atlantic 10 championships, with two Atlantic 10 Tournament Titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances and one A-10 regular season title. The 2006 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year just carried the Spiders through their best season ever, highlighted by the program's first-ever regular season A-10 title after dominating the league with a 6-1 record, as well as its second consecutive A-10 Championship and NCAA appearance. The Spiders also garnered a program-best 16 wins with a 16-4 mark on the season, including a win over powerhouse Virginia, an 11-game win streak and a five-week stint in the Top 10, when they were ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation, the highest the Spiders have ever been ranked. In 2005, after winning the Atlantic 10 Championships, Murphy earned national recognition as she was named the women's lacrosse Coach of the Week by CSTV (5/9). Additionally, she led her team to a 9-8 overall record, and a fourth place finish in the Atlantic 10 with a 5-2 mark in the conference, as well as the program's first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Murphy helped her team to its highest national ranking in over two decades when Richmond held the No. 18 position after defeating a trio of Top 20 teams. In her first year on the sidelines, the Spiders got off to their best-ever start (6-2) on their way to recording 12 wins, the most in the program's history. After four seasons of building the program, Murphy's 2006 squad broke both of these marks with a 12-2 start and 16 wins on the season. Murphy came to Richmond after serving as head coach at Boston University, where she launched the women's lacrosse program to the Division I level six years ago. However, Murphy did not rest on her laurels and celebrate the program's rise to the varsity level; instead, she took the program to heights some only dream about. Murphy's BU teams excelled against some of the toughest competition in the country during her six seasons at the helm, posting wins over national powerhouses and, in her last three seasons at Boston, the Terriers posted rankings of 17th, 11th and 13th in the country. In 2000, Murphy directed the Terriers to the America East regular season and tournament championships and to an NCAA at-large berth. Murphy was twice named the America East Coach of the Year. From 1998-2005, Murphy was the head coach for the U.S.A National Developmental Squad, a feeder program for the World Cup and Elite Squad. Murphy is well known in the lacrosse community, as a former member of the U.S. Lacrosse Board of Directors and the U.S. Lacrosse Women's Board of Governors. Murphy currently directs the Richmond Spiders Lacrosse Camp, as well as local leagues, clinics and youth camps. In October of 2002, she was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame for playing and coaching and her service to the Boston area. The award was presented by Brine, Inc. representative Shelby Hodgkins, Murphy's team sponsor for eight years. Murphy previously coached at Division III Muhlenberg College (1992-95) in Allentown, Pa, where she was the head lacrosse and field hockey coach. In addition to her coaching duties, she served as administrative assistant to the director of athletics and was an instructor in the physical education department. She began her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Boyertown H.S., where she helped lead the team to a 14-1 record. A coaching stint at Oberlin College in Ohio followed. A native of Boyertown, Pa., Murphy was a two-time All-American at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Elected captain her senior season, she earned team MVP honors and finished her stellar career as the school's all-time leading scorer. Murphy received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from UMass in 1990. Murphy currently resides in Richmond, Virginia with her two daughters, Abby, now eleven years old, and Sara, born in September 2004. Why Richmond? Coach Murphy has the many answers to that question. · Commitment to win · Private school education · A great fit for a lacrosse player searching for a university with strong academics, a beautiful campus and bright lacrosse future · Strong Atlantic 10 Conference, offering an automatic qualifier to NCAA · Strength of national lacrosse competition lying less than three hours away · State-of-the-art facilities · Strong support staff · Both grass and turf to train on
